Mathematics is apparent in all aspects of our daily lives and in the workplace, and gaining competence during primary school is important. From Prep to Year 6, we provide high-quality mathematics teaching where students are provided with challenging, exciting, and enjoyable maths learning experiences. Students engage in a minimum of five hours of mathematics each week.
We carry out flexible groupings to cater for students at their point of need, from Prep to Year Six. Teachers build strong relationships with all students and ensure that differentiation through maths lessons provides for learners at every stage. Problem Solving is embedded in our maths units.
St Francis Xavier’s School is well resourced with maths equipment, both at the whole school and classroom level. We regularly undertake an inventory to ensure classroom needs are being catered to and updated.
Technology is embedded throughout units and all students from Prep to Year Six utilise pre and post-testing using Essential Assessments. All data is collected on a whole school data system.
At St Francis Xavier’s School, we aim to ensure that students:
- are confident, creative users and communicators of mathematics, who can investigate, represent and interpret situations in their personal and work lives and as active citizens.
- develop an increasingly sophisticated understanding of mathematical concepts and fluency with processes and can pose and solve problems and reason in Number and Algebra, Measurement and Geometry, and Statistics and Probability.
- recognise connections between mathematics and other disciplines and appreciate mathematics as an accessible and enjoyable discipline to study.
